Resistance Options: Add resistance to the adapter
This adapter is designed for high-power players, desktop sound cards and PCs when paired with low-impedance, high-sensitivity in-ear monitors (IEMs). The classic ER4 series is a typical example.
Many audiophiles face this common problem:
When low-impedance high-sensitivity earphones are directly connected to high-power sources, the excessive output gain causes abrupt volume spikes. It becomes difficult to fine-tune at low volume levels, with noticeable background hiss and current noise.
Connecting this impedance adapter changes the system load:
- Volume control becomes smooth and linear. No dramatic volume jump from level 0 to 1, making low-volume listening easy to manage;
- Effectively suppresses background hiss and current noise for a quieter sound background;
- Improves driver matching. For classic IEMs such as ER4, pairing with a suitable impedance adapter delivers cleaner sound layers and noticeably better listening experience.
Based on Ohm’s Law: Higher impedance = smaller loop current.
After connecting the headphone impedance adapter, the overall load impedance rises → current flowing into the earphone drops → earphone volume decreases. It is a passive resistive attenuation solution.
The higher the impedance value, the quieter the earphone will be. They are inversely proportional.
1. Mobile phones / MP3 players / portable DACs from iFi, Cambridge and FiiO / portable leak testers (low-output mobile devices)
75Ω or 100Ω impedance adapter is recommended. Works well for mild background hiss and current noise. Note: It has limited effect if the device produces severe inherent circuit noise.
2. PCs, desktop sound cards, high-power players (high-output devices) 150Ω-200Ω impedance adapter recommended. It solves the issue of excessive output gain, perfectly fits low-impedance high-sensitivity IEMs such as ER4 armature earphones and optimizes volume linearity.
Important Notice
Do not blindly choose an excessively high impedance value. Too high resistance will result in insufficient volume. You will need to crank up the source output heavily, defeating the purpose of this adapter.
